The golden desert of Jaisalmer

The golden desert of Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar desert in Rajasthan. Its Sandstone forts loom over the city, protecting the city since 1155. It was once a trading point for people across Arabia, Persia and Egypt. The evidence of the exchanging culture remains evident till today, this precious city holds Jain temples and much more to explore.

Places To Visit:

  • Jaisalmer Fort- is nestled in between the golden sands of the Thar Desert, it is steeped with its rich history and heritage, it displays great craftsmanship and is now one of the most renowned forts in the world.
  • Kuldhara Village- is located 20 kilometers from the Golden City, Jaisalmer. The village, rich with its fair share of legends and myths, is said to be a spooky and haunted village.
  • Desert National Park- is one of the largest national parks spread over 3162 km of land. It is a great example of the ecosystem in the Thar Desert, the sand dunes form 20% park.
  • Gadisar Lake- was built in the 14th century, it used to be the source of drinking water for the whole town of Bikaner. It has now developed as a tourist spot with many temples and shrines that surround the lake.
  • Tazia Tower and Badal Palace- the Badal Palace has a shape of a cloud and has the Tazia Tower emerging from it. This is a very recognizable monument in Jaisalmer as it is very different from the usual Rajputana architecture.
  • Sam Sand Dunes- is a rare desert area which lies on the edge of the Jaisalmer Desert National Park and is also nominated as a must-visit in Rajasthan. These dunes are 42-45 kms away from the golden city.
  • Bada Bagh- is a cenotaph joined to a garden, located about 6 kms north of Jaisalmer, on the way to Ramgarh. The set of royal cenotaphs are basically chhatris of the Maharajas which once ruled the Jaisalmer state.
  • Tanot Mata Temple- is situated 122 km from Jaisalmer, it is a historical temple located at the Longewala.
